The Health Benefits of Eating Ginger

At Green Gourmet one of the staples of the kitchen is ginger. Not only does it mask the unpleasant odours of certain ingredients, it is also great in enhancing the smell and flavours of a dish. Yet, apart from its culinary effects, ginger is also known for its multitude of health benefits.

Ginger contain gingerols, potent antioxidants that can improve the immune system and help slow down the ageing process. Furthermore, gingerols are potent anti-inflammatory agents, and studies have shown long-term use can help relieve various aches and pains.

Double-blind studies have also shown ginger to be effective in both the treatment and prevention of nausea. In addition, some evidence suggest ginger can be effective in the treatment and/or prevention of indigestion, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Despite all these benefits, from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine the key is in balance. Ginger is seen as a herb with a warming nature. This makes it ideal in creating balance in dishes with ingredients that have a cooling nature. Taking extra ginger can also help disperse coldness, promote sweating, improve circulation, regulate digestion, and reduce nausea.

However, people with signs of yang excess and yin deficiency such as constipation, dry skin, chronic thirstiness, red eyes, and strong perspiration should avoid excess ginger intake. People who suffer from high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, and menopause should also avoid excess ginger.

Fortunately, at Green Gourmet this has already been taken into consideration. Furthermore, if you ever feel that you can benefit with some extra ginger in your food, all you have to do is ask.

End of a Chapter and Opening New Ones

The Green Gourmet family would like to thank each and every one of you who have been supporting our Newtown restaurant since we first opened in 1998, as the pioneer and first ever plant-based eatery in Newtown. An interesting time when there was a complete lack of vegetarian dining in Sydney; let alone vegan.
Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to end the lease (at Newtown) to better the long term health of the overall business.  We are so grateful to have been an integral part of the ever growing Newtown vegan community and now have our efforts focused onto expanding our love across the broader parts of Sydney and beyond including the Central Coast...
